DopplrHQ on Twitter

Twitter / DopplrHQ, originally uploaded by blackbeltjones.

We’ve been inspired by the use of the status-streaming service Twitter to hold a conversation with customers of other great services and companies like The School of Everything, Zappos, Get Satisfaction, Moo, and Adaptive Path to name a few.

So please welcome DopplrHQ to the world and your twitterstream, where a small plastic rabbit will be tweeting merrily about, amongst other things - new stuff before anywhere else, service announcments, answers to questions you have about Dopplr, and (almost inevitably as it’s Twitter) fascinating ephemera like what we had for lunch…

  1. :-( I thought that with the image of the bunny that this would be the bunny Twittering, not customer outreach. Sigh. I was waiting all morning to DM the bunny to see if it did something when getting a DM.

I have nothing against you guys reaching out over Twitter. It’s just not what I was looking for, so no offense meant when I removed you guys earlier today.

BTW, hooked up the Tower Bridge and Andy_House to my stream. :-)

Hope all is well in Dopplr-land (seems like it’s been a fun week).

  2. Dear Matt,

Today I was invited to join Dopplr by one of your community. My work is about food culture and communities and I need to travel a lot. I’m perfect for Dopplr, Dopplr is perfect for me. But when I tried to enter one of my destinations, Dopplr refused.

Would it be possible for Dopplr to be less… shall we say politically biased?

One project that I am currently working on is with the village of Ein Houd in Israel (between Tel Aviv and Haifa), researching and seting up a pilot for a farmers market filled with locally produced artisanal products. Ein Houd is one of several hundred unrecognized Palestinian villages within Israel, and… is consequently also unrecognized by… Dopplr. I was not allowed to upload the trip although I can’t imagine that this is intentional.

May I suggest that Dopplr allow its users the ability to write that names of the villages and mega cities that they are visiting, instead of allowing a script to make geopolitical decisions? Also for carbon footprinting, territory is one serious business!

  3. Debra,

We use the geonames.org database (at least a large subset) and are working to expand the location feature in a way that will let Dopplr users enter their own information. Please take a look at the FAQ questions where we deal with location information:

    http://www.dopplr.com/main/faq#03-01

    Specifically:

Will I be able to add a place not listed in GeoNames?

Not quite yet. But we’re working on a manual “override” — a way to enter the city yourself — as part of a process that helps you and provides valuable feedback to GeoNames, which in turn will provide valuable data for other Dopplr users (and others who use the data).
