Getting trips into Dopplr quickly using Twitter

Did you know that there’s a special Dopplr user on Twitter that is there only to receive messages from you, which then get turned into trips on Dopplr? You can send it a private message by twittering something like “D dopplr a trip to Helsinki on May 19th until May 23rd”, or you can also use the “@dopplr” prefix if you don’t mind the details being seen in ‘public’ on twitter.

How does it work? First, you have to follow dopplr user on Twitter and register your Twitter username with us. We check twitter regularly using their API for your messages. Then, like our other methods of automatically receiving trips (like email or SMS), we process your twitters using a heuristic method of scanning for cities and dates, influenced by your trip history.

It works well for simple return trips. If you’re going on a trip with many stops, we’ve got a sophisticated multi-stop trip editor on the website for you.

Look in your account settings for details of how to turn this feature on.

  1. Pretty neat. And smart way to solve the password problem. How often does dopplr check Twitter btw, wondering how long it will take see my twitter update on dopplr…

And can you also do: “@dopplr a trip to paris on nov 6″ without the “to nov 10″ when it’s only a 1 day trip?

  2. I kind of want the other way around… announcing my trips to twitter when I’m taking then.

  3. @Dan, I like that idea too! But you have to be able to customize the message like Twitterfeed does for blog posts.

@Matt Have you seen the WP plugin that this guy made: http://www.rodenas.org/blog/2007/10/09/wp-dopplr/ I asked for some additional features (show city and country, show past trips etc) and he did it! You should link to it (I swear I don’t know this guy, you can even read my comment on that post asking for the changes). I think other bloggers who use Dopplr would like the flexibility of being able to show their upcoming and past trips they way they want. I use it on my side bar for my travel site. Very cool!

Also is it totally lame that I love Dopplr so much? I keep telling everyone about it. The only thing it needs is more people! I should get an honorary “Dopplr Evangelist” badge on my profile. ;)

  4. I would like to have a manual way to add travel documents. If I make a trip, and later mail hotel reservations etc., Dopplr often makes new trips, even to the same place with the same date.

Also messes up if the airport is not the same as the final destination.

Just make an “Upload travel documents” on all trips, that would save my day.

    =)

  5. Nice work – must remember to use this. do i need to follow @dopplr first? i think i only currently follow dopplrhq

Christine- ferran is a great guy. he is an architect at a spanish bank, knocked up the plug in for fun.

  6. James,

Yes, you have to follow @dopplr on Twitter first. I should have mentioned that in the post, and I’ve updated it to make it clear.

Full details and all the instructions are in your account settings page.
