Great Coverage from the BBC

The BBC, covering LeWeb, had extremely kind words for us. In a story entitled “Europe can ‘lead web technology’,” the Beeb wrote, in part:

Europe has its success stories as well as the Valley. Last.FM was sold to US media company CBS Corp. for $250m this year and many think Dopplr, a social network for business travellers, will be the next big company from the continent.

Dopplr announced at LeWeb that it will let anyone who wants to use their service to register for free, shifting from an invitation only basis.

By telling Dopplr who your friends are, and where you are travelling, it will tell you when you and your friends are in the same city.

To globetrotters who attend conferences such as LeWeb, the service has proved popular, and by opening it up to allow anyone to register, Dopplr is entering its heavy growth phase.

A Dopplr Tour

Tour Slide1A major design goal of Dopplr has been simplicity: We believe you should be able to use the site with almost no special help other than what’s in front of you on each page.

That said, we’d like to introduce a “Dopplr Tour” page that we hope will highlight some key features for longstanding Dopplr travellers as well as new ones. If you are new to Dopplr you can sign-up here.

Please take a look. Let us know how we can make it better. Like the service itself, we’ll be improving the tour as time goes on.

Meanwhile, here we go:

Jimmy Wales Loves Dopplr…

We are thrilled to see that in this New York Times Q&A, WIkipedia founder Jimmy Wales cites his “Favorite non-Wiki Web-site”:

An invitation-only travel site called Dopplr.com. You put in your travel schedule and link to your friends. It allows you to see where everyone is. I love it.

We’re pretty fond of Wikipedia, too…

U.S. Airlines Working to Prevent Passenger Strandings

NY Times: Better Airline Tracking Software Could Mean Fewer Stranded Travelers and Less Frequent Delays. And now, after upgrading their software, airlines claim they can make good on promises not to strand passengers. Those vows will be tested as the holiday travel season begins and winter storms descend on airports across the United States.

This is good news — if the system works.

Dopplr opens to travellers from 100 top NGOs

Few people travel more than the good folks who work with the NGOs that do such important work around the world these days? So today we’re opening up Dopplr to travellers from 100 top NGOs and nonprofits.

Anyone with a valid email address at one of the Dopplr NGO 100 institutions can now join Dopplr. Just go to www.dopplr.com/ngo100 to start sharing your trips.

The Dopplr NGO 100 follows on our earlier opening up of the service to business travellers at 100 major companies and international organizations, and then our opening to 100 top business schools.

With a Little Help From Our Friends: A Nice Dopplr How-To

Mahalo DopplrThe folks at Mahalo have created a nifty “How to Use Dopplr” page — better than the one I was working on, ahem…

There’s also a video here at Blip.TV; we emphasize that the video is tongue-in-cheek, that is, not entirely serious — actually not remotely serious. But it’s hilarious. (Caution: the default is to run when you open it; so if you’re in an office be aware that music will play.)

Thanks, Mahalo!

Reminder: Improvements to Trip and Journal Pages

As we mentioned earlier, we’ve been working hard to improve the Trip and Journal pages.

You can now add pictures to trips; find out who in your network is likely to have the most amount of expertise about that destination (based on frequency of visits there); and see “sparklines” and other visualisations of the information.

You can also add private notes on trips and see who lives in your trip destination. Pictures can be added from Flickr, and we have a Facebook connection.

The Journal, your record of activity on Dopplr, is now much more detailed and includes a calendar widget to help you look at your past trips. You can also access others’ journals if they share their trips with you. There’s also a web feed that you can subscribe to for automated updates.

Email Alerts

Dopplr now gives you email alerts about coincidences in your trusted network. If somebody is coming to your town, or happens to be travelling where you are, you will get an alert in your inbox. You can change your email alert settings on this page.

Time Zone Accuracy

As MattB notes in a comment in another posting, we just upgraded the way we handle time zones. Your location is calculated just after midnight in your current location rather than midnight GMT, as was previously the case.

What does this mean? Basically this: Travellers in California will no longer have their departures announced 8 hours early.
